Artist Spotlight: Jarrod “Shug” Barnes
An artist of his own right, keeping a low profile in the spotlight while creating astounding work out loud in the mist of fashion & theatre 🎭, Jarrod “Shug” Barnes is an Atlanta-based (but nationally-recognized) Costume Designer, Fashion Designer, Tailor and Consultant, profoundly known for his exceptional work in the theatre and broadway work as a costume designer and wardrobe master.
Inspired by legendary greats such as the late Andre Leon Talley and Ruth E. Carter, Jarrod’s approach to fashion design is like no other. When he designs, rules are off limits and his creativity establishes a bound of extraordinary connection with fabrics and colors of storytelling and unique tailoring, which is why his work has continuously been celebrated in the work of theatre for many years. He is a legend in the fashion and theatre community.
His dedication and skill led to his first professional role as a costume designer with Kenny Leon’s True Colors Theatre Company, propelling his career forward. Through his work, Barnes aims to highlight the beauty and strength of Black culture, using fashion and costume design as mediums to tell compelling stories and provoke thought.
